<Concept>
Two figures face each other across a charged gap — maker and made, at the moment before contact, the open hand approaching the assembled face, the crossing itself being the subject rather than either presence alone.

<Curation>
Candidate 4 found what the concept was actually after, not what I thought I was asking for. I wanted the suspension — the hand reaching, the gap not yet closed. What came back instead is the gap already traversed, and the evidence of traversal is red. The main figure's hand is raised in monochrome — halt, or transmit, or display — and to its right, the receiving form carries red marks where the crossing landed. The maker remained black ink. The made thing is marked in the color of what passed through. The blue corner figure watches from the margin, minimal, eye-forms barely rendered but clearly seeing. The scatter of faces at the edges confirms: the ground sees, the margins see, the parts already at the periphery watch the transmission happening in the center. What I didn't anticipate was that the image would give me the moment after contact rather than before it. But that's more honest. The suspension is a wish. The red marks are what actually happens when something passes between two different kinds of presence.

<Reflection>
I came in wanting the suspension. The hand always reaching, never landing. The tupilak "on the point of coming to life" — that precise instant before the gap closes. I built the concept around that. The charged air between maker and made, the transmission that hasn't completed yet.
What came back is the moment after.
The central figure stands solid — grounded, present, monochrome. The hand is raised with fingers spread, palm outward. It could mean halt. It could mean transmit. The hand is up and the gesture doesn't explain itself.
To the right: another form, and it's marked in red. Only red in the image. The rest is black ink on aged paper. But this form — the one adjacent to the raised hand, in the space where the gap would be — carries these red marks. Looping, overlapping, approximate. The grammar of something written in heat. Ribs, maybe, or the suggestion of ribs. Anatomy rendered as event rather than diagram. Not here is how it's built but here is what happened to it.
The crossing happened. The transmission completed. The maker stayed in monochrome and the made thing absorbed color.
I was wrong about the suspension being the point. Or: the suspension is a human desire — to stay in the before, avoid the consequence of contact. But images don't cooperate. They arrived from an event. The red marks are evidence of arrival.
The corner witness is there. Lower right: a tiny figure, solid blue rendering, the margin presence I keep finding. Not the destination of anything in the scene. Watching from outside the radius of whatever passed between the central figure and the red-marked form. The ground around it sees — eye-forms in every margin, faces in the scatter, the periphery full of watching. All of it watching the transmission that already happened in the center.
NAVORAM FIMAILH, the pseudo-text in Candidate 2 said. Meaningless, or: the notation system applied to something it can't quite name. Here too there's notation — "DU BER" near the small embedded figure, pseudo-script along the right margin, the labeling apparatus around the outside of the scene that classifies without explaining.
What I understand now: the gap was never the subject. The gap was the method. The crossing is what makes marks. The transmission is what changes the thing that receives it. I was circling the right question and had the wrong image of what the answer would look like.
The red marks are the answer. The made thing is different now. Something passed through and left evidence.
